Officials in the Khmelnytskyi province in western Ukraine said several military targets were attacked by Russia in the early hours of May 29, causing damage to five planes and one runway.

"We are working to control fires at facilities that store gasoline, lubricants, and ammunition and find a way to restore a runway. At least five aircraft have been rendered inoperable." Khmelnytskyi Governor's Office posted a notice on Telegram today and confirmed that the Russian air strike at dawn had hit a military target.

This is considered an unusual move because Ukrainian authorities often do not publish information about military facilities hit by Russian attacks. The location of the ambush at dawn on May 29 was not disclosed, but Khmelnytskyi province was home to a sizeable Ukrainian air force base before the outbreak of hostilities.

Ukraine's Defense Ministry later reported that infrastructure in the southern port city of Odesa was burned in the attack but did not disclose the extent of the damage.

The Ukrainian Air Force previously claimed to have intercepted 37 out of 40 Kh-101/555 cruise missiles and 29 out of 35 suicide crewless aerial vehicles (UAVs) deployed by Russia in early morning raids.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the information.

Russia has repeatedly attacked Khmelnytskyi with Kalibr cruise missiles since the outbreak of hostilities. During the suicide drone attack on the city on May 13, massive fireballs were raised when a large ammunition depot on the outskirts of Khmelnytskyi was destroyed.

Western military experts assess that Russia launches continuous raids with cheap UAVs to deplete ammunition for Ukraine's air defense complexes. Ukrainian officials had repeatedly expressed concern to the West about the risk of a shortage of anti-aircraft missiles before the counterattack they often mentioned.

Vadym Skibitsky, deputy head of the General Department of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, on May 19, said that Russia is focusing on attacking positions and ammunition depots to disrupt their counterattack preparation instead of trying to destroy them. Destroy the energy infrastructure as before.
